Description
- The DS3231 is a low-cost, high-precision I2C real-time clock (RTC) with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal (TCXO) and crystal. The device includes a battery input to maintain accurate timing when mains power is disconnected. The integrated crystal improves the long-term accuracy of the device and reduces the number of components in the production line.The DS3231 is available in commercial and industrial temperature ranges in a 16-pin 300 mil SO package.
- The RTC stores seconds, minutes, hours, days of the week, date, month and year information. Months with fewer than 31 days will automatically adjust the date at the end of the month, including corrections for leap years. The clock operates in either a 24-hour format or a 12-hour format with /AM/PM indication. Two settable calendar alarms and a settable square wave output are provided. Address and data are transmitted serially via the I2C bidirectional bus.
- Precision, temperature-compensated voltage reference and comparator circuits are used to monitor VCC status, detect power supply failures, provide reset outputs, and automatically switch to backup power if necessary. In addition, the /RST monitor pin can be used as a manual input to generate a µP reset.
- In addition to its high timing accuracy, the DS3231 has a number of other features that extend the range of additional functions and options available to the system host. A very accurate digital temperature sensor is integrated into the device and can be accessed (as time) via the I2C* interface. This temperature sensor has an accuracy of ±3°C. The on-chip control circuitry enables automatic power detection and manages power switching between the main power supply and the backup power supply (i.e., the low-voltage battery). If the main power supply is powered down, the device continues to provide accurate timing and temperature with no impact on performance. The on-chip reset function can be used to restart the system microprocessor when the main power supply is recharged or the voltage value returns to within tolerance.
