Description
LM7805 is a 5V output positive voltage regulator IC. It is the IC of LM78xx positive voltage regulator series. It is manufactured in TO-220 and other packages. This IC is quite reliable due to which it is widely used in commercial equipment and educational project. Moreover it is also used by many electronics hobbyists and tinkerers in their projects due to its low cost, easy to use and low external components. The IC has many built in features which make it ideal to use in variety of electronic applications like the 1.5A output current, over load protection function, over heat protection, low quiescent current etc.
Voltage regulators are very common in electronic circuits. They provide a constant output voltage for a varied input voltage. In our case the 7805 IC is an iconic regulator IC that finds its application in most of the projects. The name 7805 signifies two meaning, “78” means that it is a positive voltage regulator and “05” means that it provides 5V as output. So our 7805 will provide a +5V output voltage.
The output current of this IC can go up to 1.5A. But, the IC suffers from heavy heat loss hence a Heat sink is recommended for projects that consume more current. For example if the input voltage is 12V and you are consuming 1A, then (12-5) * 1 = 7W. This 7 Watts will be dissipated as heat.
The LM7805 is a popular and widely used 5V linear voltage regulator. It is part of the 78xx series of voltage regulators, where “xx” represents the fixed output voltage. The LM7805 specifically outputs a regulated 5V DC and is ideal for powering circuits that require a stable 5V supply.
